Chapter 12
Monday April 26, 1993
Jenks sat alone as she always did. It was lunchtime and all the other kids were playing, eating or even some doing their homework. Not the gangly awkward kid. Ever since she had gone through her growth spurt, most of the kids were brutally mean to her. There was one extremely small petite blonde that had caught her eye. They even lived across from one another, but neither knew that. They had never spoken and the tall youngster knew they probably never would.
Soon the bell would ring and she would have to go back to class. It really didn’t matter where she was as she always felt so alone and isolated. Both her parents worked all the time, especially her father who was a lawyer. Most of her time was spent with babysitters or her grandmother. While the free time her father spent with her was devoted to her learning basketball, she didn’t have the confidence to pursue it. Why would she do something that would make her standout more than she already did?
The tall girl stood and pushed her chair back in place. Her blue eyes met the floor and she wasn’t watching where she was going. Of course she bumped into someone. When her blue eyes looked up, they were staring into the sweetest green eyes she had ever seen. When the image cleared, she realized it was the little blonde girl who had caught her attention on more than one occasion. “Sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going. Hope you’re not hurt.”
Green eyes took in the blue eyes before they left her face and were once more looking at the ground. Before the small blonde girl could say anything, another girl of average height and strawberry red hair shoved past her. “You ought to be sorry, you big ape. Why don’t you go play at the zoo with the rest of the animals? As clumsy as you are, you should be in a cage. Now shoo! Go away!” The girl then made a shooing motion with her hands.
Jenks took a deep breath and tripped over her large feet as she attempted to escape. Those too had gone through a growth spurt and she was still getting used to them. The raven-haired child stopped at the doorway to the cafeteria to look back over her shoulder. There had been something about the small blonde girl. There had been something in her eyes. But the freak, as she was known, would never stand a chance with a girl like that. She was sweet and innocent and one of the popular kids.
If the tall preteen had looked just a little longer, she would have caught a set of green eyes staring at her. The small blonde watched as Jenks shuffled out the door and on to her class. Beth turned and looked at her friend, giving her a look of disbelief. “I should go after her. That was so mean of you.” She pushed her way past her supposed friend just as the bell rang.
